VIEWPOINT
Flying in or driving through the Rio Grande Valley, once you pass the last red light before the two mile long Queen Isabella Causeway one tends to start untying shoes and breathing sighs of relief. You pass the catamarans and parasailers below and can't wait to get out of the car.
It's rumored to be actually illegal here to wear a necktie. A traffic jam consists of six cars at a 20 second light. "Crime" as we know it, does not exist. You are less than a half mile from the calm Laguna Madre or the waves and shells of the Gulf of Mexico, take your pick, anytime.
We have more species of birds in the area than Costa Rica and are becoming a mecca with the new World Birding Center. Sportfishing is a non-stop activity here for most folks, take your pick again, fly-fishing for Reds in the Bay or Offshore cruising for monster Mahi-Mahi.
There are about three new restaurants that have opened on the Island and a new CVS Pharmacy has begun construction on Padre Blvd. The 31-story Sapphire Condominiums are near completion and there are many new mid-rise luxury condominium complexes planned for the area.
Ongoing anticipation and debate is underway concerning new building heights and Isla Blanca Park development, as well as growth on the North end of the Island. This is a very exciting time for us here in South Texas with increased focused marketing efforts and Island-wide Infastructure beautification plans underway. |
